Description

Codenames is a social word game with a simple premise and challenging game play. Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames. The teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the table. Their teammates try to guess words of their color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin. The game works very well with 4 players if you prefer to guess without help. Or you can add more players if you prefer lively discussion. There is also a cooperative variant where a single team tries to achieve the highest score they can by playing against the game itself.

We've had a blast playing this game. It appeals to all ages and is challenging but not too challenging, enough to make it fun without being frustrating. The price is right for a board game and it's small enough that it travels well. We brought it along on a car trip and played it in several Airbnb's along the way. It was a nice activity at the end of the evening after hiking and visiting national parks.A fun, classic game that engages even the quietest of guests at your next party or board game night! One thing that has been fun is to put couples against each other watching them communicate and make their decisions. Definitely replayable. My daughter and son in law come over for Sunday eats and we play this game after. Makes you use your brain and in a fun way!! We have teams and compete to see who can win the most games on that day!!There are a lot of party games out there that diminish or get overwhelming with the more people you add to the game. This is not one of those. In fact, this is one of the better party games that can work a variety of ages and a variety of teams.I have played with young children and great uncles. The older or younger side of things take a bit to warm up and get into the game, truly understand it, but once you are there, it's a blast for everyone. It's about communication and knowing each other as you play, and that connection can actually build while playing the game. This is not one of those games where you have to have known someone since pre-school in order to stand a chance at guessing what they're thinking. The components are quality, the ability to play anywhere that had a solid and stable surface to hold the cards is great, and it's a great value. I'm not sure it's going to make anyone who hates party games suddenly likely them, and that person who refuses to play games probably still won't play but.... that one person who sits in the back and just watches everyone might just jump in after a few rounds once they realize that participate in the game is a commitment to fun and joy and not the loss of the evening to being proven how smart or not as smart as everyone else you are.yo ya lo habia jugado. si requiere estrategia. la ventaja es que muchos pueden jugar. esta en ingles! This game is a MUST HAVE for game nights! It's fun between generations, too. As word meanings may NOT be the same! It can be a challenge to come up with just the right clues... but fun. Lot's of laughs! Get your thinking caps on!!This game is really fun and gets people excited for each round that is played. This is great with a group of people. It can be played with just a few, but has a different experience when played in a group.Such a fun game! It’s easy to pick up and super fun to play again and again. I bought it for myself, but it would make a great gift.Very good gameConcept: A word game in which there are 2 teams and 25 words on a board. 8/9 of them belong to each team (9 for the team that go first). Each team has one 'spymaster' who knows the identity of the all the words and using 1 word clues has to get his team to guess which words belong to that team.Players: 4+, but works well with bigger groups - I played with 8.Learning curve: Very fast - I would say that for anyone over the age of 11 they should be able to fully understand the game within the first play.Game time: Each game lasts about 15 minutes, maybe less when you get better, but you find that you will play back to back games changing who is the spymasterExcitement - The game is pretty exciting and given the short gametime teams who are losing at the start are rarely in a position in which they have 0% chance of winning (unlike games like monopoly where the winner is determined long before the end of the game)Overall would recommend this game and if I lost this game I would buy it again. This game is fantastic with a large group. I've only ever played it with a minimum of 6 people and dont think I'd play it with fewer players. As a party game though, this is great and my friends always ask me to bring it when we have group get togethers. In basic terms the game is made up of a grid of 25 words and two teams (red and blue). Each team nominates a spymaster who has to try and get their team to guess their words first. A grid card is taken at random by a spymaster and will show the spymasters which words their team needs to guess. This card also shows which team goes first. The team going first has 9 words, the team going second has 8 words to help make the game fair. Then teams take turns with the spymaster giving a one word clue trying to link as many of their words as possible. The clue is followed by the number of words the spymaster is linking it to. For example the grid might have the words England and France, if your team has these words and no other countries are on the board the clue could simply be "countries, 2". It gets more tricky when there are other similar words on the board e.g. if America is on the board but that is incorrect for your team. Play goes on until a team find all their words. Each game starts out quite relaxed but the tension builds every game when it nears its end. It really is funny to see how involved everyone gets. The beauty lies in the simplicity of the rules as even newcomers can understand the game within one round. Each round only takes 10-15 minutes and it's up to you how many rounds you play so it's really flexible in terms of time. Every time I have played, games have gone on for 2-3 hours of laughing and joking! If you need a simple party game then definitely look at codenamed. Honestly, I've never bought a game that has been enjoyed by so many people! With this number, the gameplay feels more like team chess than a fun night. Lots of long pauses before you speak, a long pause before anyone moves, and then a moment of congratulation or sorrow. Not until the end do you get a chance to show your working and laugh about the missteps. It's still interesting and fun in a sort of cerebral way, but I have a feeling it will sit in our cupboard until our numbers increase. The Good:• Incredibly easy and simple to learn the basics• Quick set-up, games can be quick or long dependent on players' choice• Rewards creative thinking and broad knowledge, as-well-as simplistic face-value pairing of words• Literally almost impossible to play the same game twice; almost endless possibilities due to multiple combination conditions. For the nerds: estimated possible unique games: 3.19140000E+50. Better get a comfy chair...The Bad (these are totally subjective):• The more players the better, which makes organising a game more difficult. 6+ allows for significantly more flexibility and variety (lockdowns and Covid makes this a very current issue)• Can be heavily dependent on being aware of the interests and knowledge of your teammate(/s)• Some games can be slow/unsatisfying, with repeated 1 word rounds due to randomised 'targets' causing (subjectively) unmatchable wordsBox contents:• 200 x double-sided Codenames cards• 40 x Key cards• 8 x Red Agent cards• 8 x Blue Agent cards• 1 x Double Agent card• 1 x Assassin card• 7 x Innocent Bystander cards• 1 x ~1:30 min sand timerVery good game for small groups and takes a relatively short amount of time to play a round which is good for the start or end of evenings though be warned those who have played it a lot or know their own team very well have distinct advantages - slit them up or make the teams even. Should definitely mention that good English comprehension is definitely not necessary, even though it might seem like it, the words used are sufficiently simple that the game can be played even by those with an intermediate level of English (though it's probably better to make the better speakers the clue givers or provide them both with a dictionary if they have a lower level of English).
